Legal ICT opens office in Brussels

1 February 2018

Since 2010, Legal ICT provides practical legal advice to national and international clients out of their offices in the Netherlands. On the 1st of February, Legal ICT will open a new office in the centre of Brussels, the heart of European legislation, under the direction of Matthijs van Bergen.

“European legislation is affecting our clients more and more. For this reason, Brussels is the perfect place for our new Legal ICT office. In Brussels, laws and regulations are made which directly impact our clients”, says Matthijs van Bergen.

The new pan-European privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) - which will enter into force this May - is an example of the increasing impact and harmonisation of European legislation. This regulation directly applies in all EU member states. This is intended to establish a high level of protection of personal data, that applies equally throughout the European internal market. Derogation or further implementation in national laws is only permitted on a limited number of specific topics.

Legal ICT helps companies comply with the GDPR and other EU laws and regulations that apply to the Internet and ICT sector and advises international organizations on the impact of deviations in national law. From their office in Brussels, Legal ICT keeps a close eye on European developments. This way, Legal ICT is able to help organizations with current, international issues, such as assessing the impact of Brexit on data-exchange and trade with the United Kingdom.

Brussels: digital capital of Belgium and Europe

Additionally, Brussels is making strides in digitization. Last year, Secretary of State for digitization Bianca Debaets stated that it is her ambition to make Brussel digital capital of both Belgium and Europe. According to Didier Gosuin, Minister of Economy and Employment, more than 2.000 companies in Brussels are active in information and communication technology. This already accounts for nearly eight percent of Belgium's total GDP. In 2017 several initiatives have been launched to increase digitization in Brussels even further.

Therefore, Brussels is the perfect location for opening a brand new Legal ICT office. From the office in Brussels, our team offers a range of legal services in the field of ICT and Internet. Feel free to contact us if you have any legal questions about privacy, cloud continuity or ICT contracts.
